This is the home of Frank & Sheena Selkirk in Lucainena de las Torres. We bought it during the winter of 2000-2001 and have lived here permanently since 25th May 2007. It is home, garden, farm - and we hope a place where the loving and caring will always be welcome. We have also an apartment on the Valle del Este (Vera) development for the use of family and friends. It is about 40 minutes from the cortijo. Have a look at that, too!
September 2019. We’ve had a long, hot, dry summer here. As has much of southern and eastern Europe. As I write we are hoping for some significant rain within 24 hours. But forecasts frequently let us down!
Where are we? About 2 Km to the east of Lucainena de las Torres, a small town near the middle of Almeria province in south-east Spain. (Part of the region of Andalusia). A guide to the location is that we are not far from the well-known holiday resort of Mojacar, and on the other side is the Tabernas desert (the only desert in Europe). Around Tabernas are various film locations and (largely ex) film studios (e.g. for the “Spaghetti Westerns”. Lucainena de las Torres is an old mining village now tidied up to become one of the “Prettiest Villages in Spain”.
Sorry, we don’t know a great deal about the cortijo (farm/farmhouse). It has been around for at least 200 years. The corn threshing circle (“Era”) attests to it being very active when there was much more rain than there has been in the 20th or 21st century. It was an active and welcoming home, we hear, in the middle of the 20th century. It was not economical to farm commercially from then on, however, so by the end of the century it had become run down. Thus we were able to purchase it at the start of this millennium. Pictures from that time are mentioned above.
